2nd Meeting of the Special Commission on Judgments of The Hague Conference on Private International Law
The UIHJ participated in The Hague from 16 to 24 February 2017 in the Work of the Commission in Charge of the Drafting of an International Convention on Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Judgments in Civil and Commercial Matters
More than 200 participants from 59 Member States of the Hague Conference on Private International Law were in attendance, as well as four observer States, intergovernmental organisations such as Ohada, and international non-governmental organisations such as the UIHJ. The UIHJ was represented by its President, Françoise Andrieux, its Secretary General, Mathieu Chardon, then by Jonathan Van Leeuwen, Judicial Officer (The Netherlands).
Christophe Bernasconi, Secretary General of the Hague Conference on Private International Law, welcomed the participants. He emphasised that the presence of so many countries and participants showed an actual interest in the project, including among practitioners. "This makes the work meaningful and gives some assurance as to the acceptability of the future convention on a global level", he rightly observed.
The second meeting was again expertly and dynamically chaired by David Goddard (New Zealand). During seven days, from 16 to 24 February 2017, the participants were able to continue discussing and exchange at length on the basis of the preliminary convention drafted in 2016 and submitted to them. Conclusions and recommendations were presented and adopted at the end of the session.
The UIHJ will continue to follow the work of this convention with a view to enable faster and more efficient enforcement of judgments at international level.
